GRENADA is set to have a new prime minister as longstanding Prime Minister Keith Mitchell has been voted out of office.
In a tight general election on Thursday, Dickon Mitchell of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged victorious following preliminary results.
Dickon Mitchell’s party garnered 52% of votes while Keith Mitchell’s New National Party received 48%.
The NDC won nine out of 15 constituencies.
Keith Mitchell first became prime minister in 1995 and served until 2008. In 2018, he was again voted into office.
This year he had asked voters this year to give him “one for the road.”

Dickon Mitchell, 44 is an attorney and former teacher. He became the leader of the NDC last October.
In a message posted on its website, the NDC said “We are overwhelmed with gratitude and stand humbled before the Lord our God and you, the people of Grenada, Carriacou & Petite Martinique. Thank you from the bottom of each and every one of our hearts. This victory is not ours, but yours.”
