AN attempted unauthorised boarding of the Gulfstream wreck site in Sea Lots, Port of Spain was thwarted on Friday night by officers of the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard (TTCG). On man was shot in the incident.
The Gulfstream in a capsized state was towed from Tobago and kept at Sea Lots in Port of Spain since Thursday. It caused an oil spill in Tobago when it was discovered on February 7 on the southeastern coast of the island. It was refloated and brought to Trinidad.
In a release on Saturday, the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI) stated that on Friday night there was an incident that resulted in an exchange of gunfire, leaving one member of the response crew with a non-life-threatening injury. The injured crew member is currently receiving medical attention.
The ministry stated that the wreck site remains under strict protection by both the TTCG and the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS).
It stated, “The safety of all response personnel remains paramount during the final stages of this operation.”
The MEEI stated that it was collaborating closely with the Ministry of National Security, the TTPS, TTCG, and the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment to ensure the continued safety and security of the site.
