PRIME Minister Stuart Young and candidate for Port-of-Spain North/St Ann’s West says casting doubt on operations of the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) has become the Opposition’s modus operandi.
Speaking to the media after casting his vote at the International School of Port-of-Spain, Westmoorings, on Monday, Young was responding to the United National Congress’s request that the EBC be subject to a Commission of Enquiry the day after elections.
Young said, “Since 2015 we have been seeing the behaviour of the opposition, and what I suspect is them trying to align themselves with an excuse and to head to the courts for election petitions, which has unfortunately become the opposition’s modus operandi.
It’s quite unfortunate that we see these continuous attacks, even when we are not in an election season by the UNC on an independent body like the EBC. So, let’s see what happens.”
He said, “We have always had free and fair elections in Trinidad and Tobago and I can tell you the PNM will always defend that process.”
On April 24th, at a press conference held at the Office of Opposition Leader, Charles Street, Port-of-Spain, UNC legal advisor Darrell Allahar said the party had serious concerns about the neutrality of the EBC and to address concerns.
He said, therefore the UNC was calling for a COE into the EBC to be held immediately after the April 28th election.
