MINISTER of Transport and Civil Aviation Eli Zakour has announced the establishment of a regulatory framework for classic, antique and vintage vehicles.
He said, “Cabinet has approved the establishment of the regulatory framework for the registration and management of classic, antique and vintage vehicles in Trinidad and Tobago.”
Zakour noted there is no legal framework in T&T for the recognition, registration and regulated use of classic, antique and vintage vehicles currently in place.
He said not having a framework in place had restricted the lawful use of such vehicles and limited economic potential.
Zakour said the development of the framework would be, “guided by international best practices including those of the Federation International Automobile (FIA) and informed by submissions of the Trinidad and Tobago Automobile Association (TTAA).”
He said the first step was to create a formal registration system to facilitate and limit the use of classic, antique and vintage vehicles on the nation’s roads.
Zakour said vehicles would fall into three categories:
- Classic: 25 years old from the date of original manufacture
- Antique: At least 45 years old from the date of original manufacture
- Vintage: At least 95 years old from the date of original manufacture.
