MARACAS Beach is now a designated sea turtle nesting site.
The Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism took swift and decisive action to protect a sea turtle nesting site at Maracas Beach following the sighting of a nesting sea turtle at the popular beach on Saturday.
On Sunday, line Minister Satyakama Maharaj and Parliamentary Secretary Dr Neil Gosine both visited the area and posted on their social media pages, advising the public of the newly designated protected area.
Protective signage and barriers were installed to prevent disturbance, allowing the eggs to incubate safely and ensuring the hatchlings have the best chance of survival.
Gosine posted, “This is a clear example of responsive leadership by the Minister and team with coordinated action where observation leads to implementation without delay. Protecting our environment, especially vulnerable species like sea turtles, remains a priority as we continue to balance development with sustainability.
“Let us all do our part to respect the signs, protect the nests, and preserve our natural treasures for future generations.”
The turtle nesting season began on March 1 and is expected to continue until August 31.
Key nesting sites this year for Trinidad include Grande Riviere, Matura, Fishing Pond, Las Cuevas, Blanchisseuse, Yarra, and Toco.
Tobago nesting sites are Stonehaven Bay (Grafton), Mount Irvine Bay, and Englishman’s Bay.
