HUNDREDS of tonnes of fuel have spilled off the coast of Mauritius and rough seas are hindering clean-up operations.
The BBC reported that the MV Wakashio vessel ran aground on a coral reef on July 25, with 4,000 tonnes of oil, which caused an ecological emergency.
Over the weekend, the ship split in half with about 90 tonnes of fuel on board and the bow was being towed away while the rear part remained stranded on the reef.
The reef, Point de’Esny, is a well-known sanctuary for rare wildlife.
