THE December 2025 decision of the Madras High Court, that the Bhagavad Gita is not a religious text but a universal work of moral and philosophical guidance, offers an opportunity to revisit this classic piece of literature that predates the New Testament.

While the Gita has always held a sacred place in the traditions of India, this reframing allows it to step beyond the boundaries of religion and emerge more clearly as a guide for human development, ethical living, and cultural understanding.

The protagonist

The great warrior Arjuna, standing in his war chariot, on the battleground is suddenly overwhelmed, he collapses onto the seat, a picture of despair. As he looked across to the enemy lines he saw his teachers, cousins, elders and friends. His strength failed and his spirit is broken. What follows is a conversation between Arjuna and his superior who encourages, educates philosophizes and coaches about how to balance the conflicting interests of our lives.

Life challenges

At its core, the Gita is a dialogue about the human condition. It does not begin in a spiritual gathering or temple but on a battlefield. As a self-development book, the Gita speaks directly to the challenges of modern life: indecision, stress, fear, duty, and the search for purpose. The moral dilemma of Arjuna mirrors the paralysis many feel when confronted with difficult choices. The guidance he receives is not dogmatic instruction but a process of inner clarification. This is where the Gita is deeply relevant today as a manual for self-mastery.

Difficult conversations

As a manager in our family business, I faced the agonizing dilemma of having to let go an employee. Emotionally, there is hesitation and attachment; professionally, there is responsibility. Delay only deepens the discomfort. Even after enforcement, I continue to agonize about the consequences, real and imagined. In later years, after reading the Gita, I adopted a more systematic approach: Full disclosure, emotions aside, right to respond, and employee’s compensation. Decisions, though still difficult, were manageable. In a world driven by (KPIs) key performance indicators this was a breath of fresh air.

The Gita teaches that one’s responsibility lies in sincere effort, not in controlling outcomes. This is big. It reduces anxiety, sharpens focus, and builds resilience. From this angle, the Gita aligns closely with modern psychological insights that emphasize process over outcome, and intrinsic motivation over external validation.

Universal truths

Beyond personal progress, the Gita emerges as a universal knowledge text. Its teachings are not confined to a specific community or belief system, rather they address universal truths about identity, consciousness, and the nature of reality. Concepts such as the distinction between the eternal self and the temporary body, meanderings of the mind, and the importance of inner balance resonate across cultures. Whether one approaches it as philosophical, or scientific, the Gita offers insights that transcend time and geography.

This universality is particularly important in today’s interconnected world. As societies become more diverse, there is a growing need for frameworks that unite rather than divide. The Gita contributes to this need by focusing on principles that are inherently human. It invites readers not to adopt a belief, but to explore an understanding.

Dharma

As a book of values, morality is presented in terms of awareness and understanding. Dharma, often translated as duty or righteousness, is not a fixed rulebook to be imposed, but a context-sensitive principle. It requires discernment, self-awareness, and a deeper appreciation of one’s role and responsibilities.

Thought Reflection

In contemporary terms, this is highly relevant. Ethical dilemmas today are rarely black and white. Whether in business, governance, or relationships, individuals are often required to navigate complex situations where competing values are at play. The Gita’s approach encourages thoughtful reflection rather than impulsive reaction. It emphasizes integrity, responsibility, and the courage to act in alignment with one’s higher consciousness, even when it is difficult.

The most important shift is in how one can approach the Gita. It emerges from a civilizational context that integrates contemplation, action, and inner growth. It reflects a worldview of harmony, care and self-discipline.

The High Court’s observation does not redefine the Bhagavad Gita; rather, it affirms that the Gita is not confined to a single tradition but can be read, studied, and applied in diverse settings from philosophy and personal life to classrooms and workplaces.
